 There are three types of genes identified play a role in the development of cancer:

•     Oncogene that is a result of mutation of genes in normal cells, called proto-oncogenes. These proto-oncogenes in normal conditions serves as a set and regulate cell growth. proto-oncogenes can regulate cell growth by using multiple processes and complex biochemical mechanisms. and involves several cell substances (proteins) there is some kind of proto-oncogenes that have been identified and the way it works is unknown. in case of deviation or mutation in one of these cells, the oncogene will form the normal regulation of normal cell will be susceptible to interference. and cancer will grow.

• Onkogen  yaitu merupakan hasil mutasi dari gen-gen sel normal yang disebut proto-onkogen. proto onkogen ini dalam kondisi normal berfungsi sebagai mengatur dan meregulasi pertumbuhan sel. proto- onkogen dapat mengatur pertumbuhan sel dengan menggunakan beberapa proses dan mekanisme biokimia yang kompleks. dan melibatkan beberapa subtansi sel (protein) ada beberapa jenis proto-onkogen yang sudah diidentifikasi dan cara kerjanya sudah diketahui. jika terjadi penyimpangan atau mutasi pada salah satu sel-sel ini, maka onkogen akan membentuk regulasi normal terhadap sel normal akan mengalami gangguan. dan kanker pun akan tumbuh.
• Gen Penindas Tumor disebut juga dengan Tumor Supressor Gennes bertindak dengan cara terbalik dari proto-onkogen, yaitu ketika salah satu proses tertentu yang tidak aktif atau tidak berjalan, maka TSG akan menghentikan proses pertumbuhan atau pembelahan selnyasejumlah kendali dihapus dan meskipun sel tersebut masih teta beregulasi, maka sel itu memiliki potensi pertumbuhan yang lebih.
• Gen Perbaikan DNA merupakan gen yang mengatur mekanisme yang digunakan sel untuk memperbaiki kerusakan sel yang terjadi pada DNA nya, kerusakan DNA in bisa terjadi karena mutasi, karena kesalahaan pada penggandaan  dan penyalinan DNA, kerusakan pada DNA bisa terjadi karena adanya gangguan dari luar, seperti terkena radiasi aktif secara metabolis. ada mekanisme dalam perbaikan DNA yaitu :
